A temporary installation in the foyer

Kurt Landauer wrote soccer history in Bavaria. He led FC Bayern München to its first German Champions’ win in 1932. In addition to tales that surrounds Landauer on the Web, Bavarian television is marking the life of the president of the football club with a movie and a documentary film, which will be broadcast in October. To accompany this, the Jewish Museum Munich is opening a temporary fan shop focussing on this Munich celebrity.

Born in Planegg in 1884, Kurt Landauer played for FC Bayern München from 1901 onward and became its president for the first time in 1913. After the Nazis seized power in 1933, Landauer was forced to resign as president due to his Jewish background. He survived the Shoah in exile in Geneva, whereas his brothers, Paul, Franz, Leo, and his sister, Gabriele, were murdered. Kurt Landauer is among the few emigrants, who returned to their native country after 1945, despite the painful experiences, and remained.

“His” soccer club, FC Bayern München, provided a link to the life he had led up until 1933 and he was even elected once again to be its president.

The installation in the foyer shows historical artifacts and props from the movie and outlines various different facets of Kurt Landauer for fans of the des FC Bayern president and other interested parties—as a lover of football, a Bavarian, and a Jew. Using the “Landauer app” issued by the Bayerischer Rundfunk, places in Munich which played a role in Landauer’s life can be visited virtually and experienced within a historical context.
